The EDOHEI Story

First opened in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan, the original Edohei restaurant established a reputation for fine Japanese cuisine. The name Edohei is a combination of Edo (the historical name for the city of Tokyo) and Hei (part of the name of the restaurant founder.) Edohei restaurant of Tokyo continues to this day, providing delicious Japanese cuisine for over 65 years.

Formally trained at Edohei (Tokyo), Sadao Ono was bestowed the highest honour from his mentor by receiving the name Edohei for his restaurant in Winniepg. Opening Edohei Sushi and Japanese Restaurant in 1988, Ono-san is credited for bringing the unique taste of sushi to the city. He has received accolades for his innovative restaurant style and is commonly regarded the "Father of Sushi".

With a firm history in sushi, the Ono family is committed to furthering the possibilities of nouveau Japanese cuisine. The challenge of creating new traditions takes experience, experimentation, and dedication to the history of this edible art form. Where Ono-san first educated the city of Winnipeg on the flavors of sushi, the Ono family now takes the responsibility for introducing new palate sensations by using Japanese ingredients and cooking techniques with Western influences.

As a family owned and operated establishment, we order the freshest ingredients to capture authenticity of Japanese cuisine. We purchase seafood locally and import from international markets, such as Vancouver, Halifax, New Zealand, Australia, and Hawaii.

We hope that your friendship experiences of the different flavors of Japan are both memorable and enjoyable.
